Warning of bacterial pollution in drinking water in Angermünde
Again and again, significant bacterial contamination in drinking water is found in Germany, which requires the authorities to intervene immediately. For example, in the 10,000-strong community of Angermünde in the Uckermark district, all residents are required to boil their drinking water thoroughly, as this can contain so-called enterococci (special lactic acid bacteria).
According to media reports, the health department of the Uckermark district has detected the enterococcal bacteria in several drinking water samples from Angermünde. Until the cause of the contamination has been determined and the bacterial load has been remedied, the residents are asked to boil their drinking water thoroughly to avoid possible health risks, the "Märkische Oderzeitung" reported.
The health department determined that the drinking water was contaminated with bacteria in two daycare centers (Casekow and Hohenselchow), which made immediate intervention necessary. Because the relatively widespread germs can pose a health risk, particularly for small children and people with a weakened immune system. You are at risk of urinary tract infections and infections in the digestive tract (gastrointestinal infections), with diarrhea, nausea and vomiting as typical symptoms. The cause of the increased bacterial load in the drinking water of the municipality of Angermünde is so far unclear, according to the current reports. However, some experts suspect the germs could be related to the mosquito infestation last summer, as the insects are now dying in the water supply systems and can thus be the source of the bacterial load.
The last coli-bacteria contamination in drinking water in Potsdam-Babelsberg occurred in July, which resulted in 3,700 affected households in Potsdam and 6,000 households in the Barnim district having to boil their drinking water for weeks. In the course of their research, the authorities identified the carcasses of three dead mice and a mole, which were discovered in a drinking water basin, as the possible cause of the bacterial contamination.
