Federal Institute for Risk Assessment warns against blowing out Easter eggs. Critics consider the warning message to be exaggerated

Easter started today. In many gardens, colorful eggs hang on the bushes or on plants in apartments. According to the old tradition, the eggs are blown out and painted themselves. And best with children. But the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has warned of the health risks of "blowing out eggs". Bacterial diseases and consequent diarrhea are at risk. The warning caused a sensation. Is it best to just hang plastic eggs in the home gardens? Is tinkering with natural ingredients a health hazard now? Critics describe the warning message as exaggerated and even criticize the lack of protective measures that really make sense.

Just in time for Easter, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin issued a seemingly strange press release. The experts pointed out that the artistically painted eggs in-house production could pose a significant health hazard. The danger does not lurk in the artificial colors that are used to decorate the Easter eggs. The eggshells are generally not considered a risk either. Rather, the production, i.e. the blowing out of the egg liquid, could be dangerous for consumers. Because all kinds of germs can collect in the egg yolk and protein, which lead to gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea.

Parents blow out the Easter eggs together with the children. But according to the BfR, precisely those should keep a great distance. It said in the message: "Since children are particularly at risk, they should avoid handling raw eggs at all." The authority asked the children to "prevent all contact" with the fresh eggs. Instead, "wooden eggs" should be used. According to the risk experts, Styrofoam is also a good alternative?

"Those who do not want to do without blowing out Easter eggs", the authority writes to those who appear to be "incorrigible parents", at least they should not peck the bowl with "roulade needles". The head of the risk agency, Professor Dr. Dr. Hensel recommended that, for example, "single-use syringes with cannulas as thick as possible" or straws be used to blow out the eggs.

In view of this warning, Katrin Teichert, mother of four children from Hanover, not only asks about the deeper meaning. No, she also doesn't understand "how I can use thick straws or medical syringes to create the pressure necessary to blow out the viscous liquid at the other end of the egg?" She tried it herself and failed miserably.

The security warnings in Germany always seem to bear new blooms. Instead of blowing out the eggs as was the custom centuries ago, they should now be processed with “injection needles” and syringes. And only if parents want to use real eggs instead of wooden toys. At some point, vegetables should only be processed with medical tools that have of course been clinically cleaned beforehand. After all, it is a process in which umpteen bacteria can simply jump onto the human body. And anyway, high-risk groups such as children and the elderly should only wear face masks. Before, during and after eating.

When the blowing process is finished, all residues of the raw egg should be thoroughly removed with lukewarm water and washing-up liquid, according to the risk authority. "If egg yolk and egg whites are still to be used," the experts warn, "they should be kept in closed containers to prevent the transmission of germs."

According to the food chemist Udo Pollmer to Deutschlandfunk, the risk of germ transmission also applies to fresh fruit and vegetables. But should raw vegetables and fruit be protected from children's hands?

Instead of the "official six-point plan", it would have been enough to wash the children's hands first before handling the food. However, this advice is missing from the risk institute's communication. “Before you blow out, you should wash the eggs, preferably with detergent. And if you want to be on the safe side, you can do without organic or free range eggs in this case, simply because they are naturally more frequently contaminated with germs. With that, everything necessary would be said and done. ”Pollmer explained. (sb)
