Authorities warn of coli bacteria in Roquefort cheese

Roquefort cheese contaminated with coli bacteria appears to have been sold through several supermarket chains. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia advised to pay particular attention to the brand, expiry date and batch number at Roquefort. This affects "Roquefort AOP cheese of the brands Cosse Noire, Decasse, Castelviel, Cora and Auchan", according to the ministry.

All contaminated Roquefort cheese comes from the French manufacturer "Societe Gabriel Coulet". After the French authorities found an increased concentration of Shiga toxin-forming Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the Roquefort cheese, the manufacturer starts a recall campaign for the above-mentioned varieties with the best before date July 28, 2012 to August 5, 2012 and September 30, 2012 to November 19, 2012 (batch numbers 120466173 and 120466177). The discovered "STEC bacteria can cause dramatic diarrheal diseases," warned the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety a week ago.

Life-threatening consequences of coli bacteria in Roquefort cheese At worst, the coli bacteria contained in Roquefort cheese not only threaten symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, but also life-threatening complications. Children under the age of six in particular, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to suffer from “haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) following the intestinal symptoms mentioned,” the ministry said. HUS was the cause of most deaths during the 2011 EHEC epidemic. Those affected suffer from internal bleeding, particularly in the area of ​​the renal arteries, usually associated with so-called anemia. In the course of the HUS, patients face acute kidney failure, which can ultimately lead to death. The disease often requires dialysis (blood washing). In addition to kidney failure, “bleeding from the brain, neurological disorders and damage to other organs (pancreas, heart) can occur as further complications,” according to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs in NRW.

Special care is currently required when buying Roquefort cheese. After the warning issued by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety about the coli bacteria in Roquefort cheese, the retail chains concerned reacted immediately and removed the cheese from the range. Kaufland and the sales company Münnich fromage GmbH started a corresponding return campaign. However, according to a message from the NRW Ministry of Consumer Affairs, “In addition to Kaufland, other supermarket chains are also affected.” However, it is not expedient to name individual supermarkets here and thus indirectly reduce the warnings to this provider. Rather, it is advisable for consumers to pay close attention to the brand, expiration date and batch numbers for Roquefort cheese. This note applies not only to the population in North Rhine-Westphalia but throughout Germany. Because, for example, the cheese has also been sold in Berlin, as a recent warning from the Berlin Senate Administration shows.

Although the Roquefort cheese, which is contaminated with coli bacteria, has been removed from the market, the authorities believe that individual packages are still at home with consumers. These should in no way be consumed. In addition, people who have symptoms such as abdominal pain or diarrhea after eating Roquefort cheese are advised to see a doctor urgently. (fp)
