Iced tea can cause kidney stones

Iced tea increases the risk of kidney stones: a healthy lifestyle can prevent

People who tend to develop kidney stones should refrain from eating iced tea on hot summer days. Black and green tea contain oxalic acid, which has been proven to promote the formation of kidney stones. This was explained by the chairman of the professional association of German internists, Dr. Wolfgang Wesiack. A healthy lifestyle can greatly minimize the risk of developing it.

Urinating pain when urinating, cramp-like muscle contractions or even blood in the urine - statistically every 25th German must expect to suffer from kidney stones at least once in their life. These painful limescale deposits occur far more frequently in men aged 20 to 50 than in women. According to current medical knowledge, the formation of such crystalline residues cannot be prevented. However, certain measures prevent the formation of further kidney stones.

In about 80 percent of the cases, urine flushes small kidney crystals out of the body without any problems. Patients often do not notice them at all or only accidentally during an examination. Such stones only require regular checks. “It only gets uncomfortable when larger stones get stuck in the ureter and trigger painful renal colic. The resulting urinary infections and urinary outflow disorders may damage the kidneys, ”says Dr. Reinhold Schaefer, urologist and managing director of the Uro-GmbH North Rhine medical network. Such kidney stones require prompt, cause-oriented treatment. Because the development of kidney stones is often hereditary. But wrong eating and drinking habits also contribute to the formation of kidney stones. They arise from deposits of various substances that are actually in dissolved form in the urine.

Certain lifestyle habits promote the crystallization of stones - especially in people with previous stress. The one-time removal of a kidney stone by shock waves or an endoscopic intervention quickly and gently removes acute complaints, but does not prevent the development of further kidney stones. In order to live a symptom-free life, those affected have to change their lifestyle.

Changing eating and drinking habits reduces the risk of kidney stones
"Patients reduce the risk of new kidney stones by changing their eating and drinking habits," advises Dr. Shepherd. The best way to do this is to eat a balanced mix of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Animal fats, i.e. sausage and meat, are best rarely on the menu. It is also important to avoid excessive salt. Adequate hydration also minimizes the risk of kidney stones. Water, unsweetened fruit and herbal teas are particularly suitable as drinks. In addition to nutrition, exercise plays an important role in avoiding kidney stones. Regular physical activity and the reduction of excess weight are supportive and can even prevent kidney stones from getting stuck.

If kidney stones form nonetheless, urologists recommend a thorough metabolic examination. They do a blood and urine analysis. With the help of these results, further treatment can be individually tailored to the patient. (pm / sb)
