Vein problems: effectiveness of horse chestnut extract confirmed again
Venous disorders are a common health problem, and their frequency and severity increase with age. Compression therapy with individually tailored medical compression stockings is the gold standard of treatment. As a current Cochrane documentation shows, taking an extract of the horse chestnut (Aesculus Hippocastanum L.) also offers an effective treatment option.
According to surveys by the German Society for Phlebology, 30 percent of the population have symptoms such as varicose veins, edema or open legs. Poor circulation in the leg veins (chronic venous insufficiency, CVI) often results in pain, swelling, itching, fatigue and increasing hardening of the skin. Compression therapy, which is particularly effective in promoting the outflow of venous blood, is difficult to use and leads to unpleasant heat build-up in summer. Many affected people therefore reject it.
An effective alternative is to take an extract from horse chestnut seeds. The efficacy and tolerability of the herbal medicinal product was recently confirmed again (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2012, Issue 11, Art. No .: CD003230. DOI: 10.1002 / 14651858.CD003230.pub4). In order to refresh existing knowledge, the authors examined the available specialist literature from the years 2002 to 2008 and requested material that had already been published and not yet published from the manufacturers of horse chestnut extracts. The data from a total of 17 randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis.
The main results: 1. Overall, horse chestnut seed extracts were found to be effective in alleviating subjective symptoms and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.
2. In six out of seven studies, measurements showed a reduction in leg circumference compared to placebo.
3. There were similar results with the itching symptom.
4. Another study even showed effects equivalent to the compression therapy performed for comparison.
Especially in summer, therefore, well-documented horse chestnut seed extracts are an effective alternative for the therapy of vein problems. (Pm)
